Stalking

Cyber stalking: cyber stalking is a serious computer crime with a likelihood of imprisonment. Unfortunately because cyber stalking is typically sophisticated and many times anonymous, the government is likely to accuse an innocent individual. Moreover, many attorneys do not have the background and/or knowledge to successfully defend a person accused of cyber stalking. Someone accused of cyber stalking needs the expertise of a strong computer crime defense attorney.

What is cyber stalking?

Cyber stalking is the use of the Internet, email or other electronic communications to stalk, and generally refers to a pattern of threatening or malicious behaviors. Cyber stalking may be considered the most dangerous of the three types of Internet harassment, based on a posing credible threat of harm. Sanctions range from misdemeanors to felonies.

Many states have enacted "cyber stalking" laws or have laws that explicitly include electronic forms of communication within more traditional stalking laws. This chart identifies only state laws that include specific references to electronic communication. However, other state laws may still apply to those who stalk, harass, threaten or bully others online, although specific language may make the laws easier to enforce. This chart classifies the various state laws addressing these three different types of online behaviors, as described below.
